1 Corinthians 14:33 + We're now The Neckers!

God is not a God of confusion. He is a God of peace. As I let that verse sink in today I could feel God reassuring me of this truth. This world seems crazy, and lately our life seems to be a crazy, bounced around bundle of emotions.

Since leaving Colorado Seth and I have been on this journey. I'll call it a journey of discovery. (I figured if I was going to go corny, I'd go all the way). When you're isolated from the field or from your central vision it's very easy to want to "throw in the towel" or re-think "Is this really what God has called us to do?". After coming home, planning a wedding, getting married, attempting to merge to lives into one it was easy for our lives to feel a bit shaken not stirred.

In that kind of moment it was easy for us to find ourselves feeling unsure. Unsure of God's ability to be everything. Unsure of the task He had set before. Unsure of ourselves to be good stewards of what God has given us. Seth and I found ourselves in that place for over the past month and a half. Unsure, fuzzy, bewildered because of our financial situation, the fuzziness that has been our placement determination, opportunities of "greener grass" on the other side all which led us to one word; confusion.

Confusion. God is not a God of confusion so where was this confusion coming from?

When I was interning with Cru in Orlando I was blessed to spend time with UK interns that worked in Epcot at Walt Disney World. I spent many hours inside the UK shops talking with them and every time I noticed a certain sign in one of them. One I couldn't help but think of after reflecting on 1 Cor. 14:33 today.  "Keep Calm and Carry On". It's one used for the Queen (and lately has stood for the confusion in a Penn State scandal).

Keep Calm and Carry On. I believe that was God's response to my recent months of confusion. He is a God of peace and in Jeremiah he reminds us that He has made plans for our good and not our harm. In His arms we are secure. He is strength manifested in the finest form. He is my comforter, my healer, my provider. It was a lack of keeping calm. We were Peter out of the boat walking on water. We got scared, took our eyes off of our Savior and found ourselves drowning in our own fear. God was saying "Keep Calm and Carry On" but we were too busy drowning out his soothing voice.

Seth and I are choosing to "Keep Calm and Carry On". Carry on in the calling He gave us, knowing that no matter our path, no matter how long it takes us to get there we will endure. We will keep calm, trusting that we have a God that loves, a God that listens and a God that provides in every way possible. He is a God of peace.

Road trip to Indy

As I type Seth and I are on our way to the great state of Indiana! We will be spending the next few days visiting with family, seeking the Lord and spending time visiting Keynote. Keynote is the creative communications and music ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. Keynote's mission is to create tools (i.e. film, music, social media apps, etc.) that will engage people in spiritual conversations so that they will come to know Jesus.

We can't wait to see all the Lord has in store as we visit! Please pray for safe travels and the Lord's guidance.

We look forward to sharing about our trip as we reflect when we get back to NY!

About our ministry

As many of you know. Seth and I have joined staff this summer in Colorado with Campus Crusade for Christ. While life is hectic between moving back and planning our wedding we have quite a task set before us. First off, leaving Clymer, NY to head to Fort Collins Colorado this summer certainly was an adventure! After being there only a couple of weeks with about a month to spare the transmission on our car died! It was definitely a lesson of patience and a time learning to fully trust in God as our provider and not ourselves. A lesson learned just in time for us to begin our new adventure as full-time staff with Campus Crusade for Christ. 
A Little Background: 
Seth and I both got involved in Campus Crusade for Christ while in college. Campus Crusade for Christ, soon to be called Cru, is a worldwide organization committed to making an eternal difference in people’s lives. This organization definitely did this for us! Our main objective is to give each person in the world the opportunity to say “yes” to Jesus. I spent this past year serving with our ministry in operations in Orlando, FL. God used me in ways we never planned or imagined. It was truly a blessing! 
"Here am I Lord, Send Me" 
We saw God move in tangible ways in the lives of college students and knew God was calling us to reach even more students in a different way. Sensing, His calling, we have joined the full-time staff of Campus Crusade for Christ. We are still unsure where we will be placed and will be announcing that soon! (so stay tuned!) 
What we do know: 
We will be serving with the US Campus Ministry reaching students in a very familiar yet foreign environment; online. Did you know that if Facebook was a country it would be the 3rd largest. There are approximately 51 million college students on Facebook and the average user spends15 hours and 33 minutes on Facebook per month. Our desire is to bring hope into this new area. 
We are thrilled that God has called us to serve him in this way. Bill Bright always used to say “Reach the campus today, Reach the world tomorrow”. We can impact the future leaders of tomorrow with just one conversation. Think about it, this year’s incoming freshman could be the future President of the United States or the next Donald Trump. The decisions they make now will impact them forever and we are so blessed to be a part of what God is doing in their lives! 
Before we report to our assignment, we must raise our financial support. Like many other missionary organizations, we, as full-time staff, have the responsibility to develop a team of financial partners who provide the consistent, necessary finances for our ministry.

Name Change and Other Challenges

If you haven't heard, Campus Crusade for Christ has changed our name to Cru. While the move was made to increase our effectiveness in evangelism and remove the confusion regarding the scope of the organization, people have taken to jumping all over the name change as a shift to liberalism or political correctness. I assure you, neither is the case. We would simply not be involved with an organization like that and would be some of the first to jump ship if that were the case. The name change isn't the first time though that our organization has been criticized.

When Bill and Vonette started CCC in 1951, people said they were crazy to leave a lucrative career in business. People said, "Oh poor Bill Bright" pitying his decision. Virtually no one was reaching out to college students at the time. Today the campus ministry is involved at 1,140 campuses in the U.S. alone.

People were critical of Bill Bright when he felt God leading him to start a Gospel conversation with the fact that "God loves you" while everyone else was starting with the sinfulness of man. Today what is known as the 4-Spiritual laws has been shared billions of times to simply communicate the Gospel, resulting in millions coming to know Christ through it.

When CCC began to work with illusionist Andre Cole, people scoffed saying there was no role for illusions in sharing the Gospel. Today Andre has shared the Gospel, through his show, in more countries than any other person alive.

When Paul Eshelman suggested making the story of Jesus into a movie, people laughed. Today the JESUS Film, which depicts the Gospel of Luke, has been translated into over 1,100 languages, and resulted in over 6 BILLION exposures to the Gospel and over 200 million decisions to follow Christ. Three quarters of the churches planted worldwide from 1990 to 2000 used the JESUS film as part of the church planting process.

Now we have changed our name to increase our effectiveness in bringing more to know Jesus Christ, but people claim we have abandoned our first love. They fear we are a victim of political correctness or secular pressure.

From just a few examples from our history, I think you can tell we have never paid too much attention to critics. We have been focused on God and clung to the Gospel. Instead of doubting God's calling, we have better spent our time proclaiming the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Doubts and fears seem to slip away when you wholeheartedly seek Him.

Changing our name was not a removal of Christ from our organization. Jesus Christ always has been and always will be the foundation of everything that we do. Without Christ we would not exist as an organization. Our statement of faith (http://www.ccci.org/about-us/statement-of-faith/index.htm) and mission (http://www.ccci.org/about-us/index.htm) have remained the same since our calling from God has remained constant, to fulfill the Great Commission by preaching the message of Jesus Christ to all.

Our hope and prayer is that people would stop seeing our name and start seeing Jesus Christ. As Francis Chan stated at the Cru national staff conference, "There is but one name that truly matters and that is the name of Jesus Christ."

I say all this with hope for the future and what God will do through Chassity and I. Currently though, our hearts are heavy, our minds are full and we are growing weary. Besides our schedules being full we have had so many obstacles in the last 6 weeks that have taken our focus from what we came here to do.

Before we left for Colorado, Chass had abdominal pains and we were forced to go to the ER for what they thought could be appendicitis. Afters two days of stressful tests, travel back and forth to Erie and hours of work missed, we came away with no diagnosis and a $1200 bill.

With hopes the worst was behind us we set out for Fort Collins, Colorado in Chassity's little red Ford Focus. The trip went well and we were very excited to begin new staff training with Campus Crusade for Christ. However, after being here only two weeks, Chassity's Focus began to make a horrible noise. Luckily it was at the place we were taking our seminary courses and she was able to easily park it and shut it down. We were relieved to find that her car was still under the extended warranty she had purchased when she bought the vehicle so we had it towed to a local Ford dealership. The mess that ensued was something I pray I will never have to relive.

The dealer quickly contacted the warranty service with our case, requiring their authorization prior to diagnosing the problem. They told us as soon as the work was authorized they'd begin work. They also told us that they'd be able to give us a loner/rental car once the warranty service cleared the work.

Although Chassity's car has only 65,000 miles on it, the shop was fairly certain it was the transmission and so we were very relieved to have the warranty. However, after several days the warranty service requested documentation to prove that the transmission had been properly maintained. Chassity's father sent in the records showing that each time the car was serviced the transmission was checked. The warranty company then responded claiming these records were inadequate. They demanded proof the fluid had been switched out, something we had no record of.

We fought with the warranty service for another week trying to get them to do what they had paid to do to no avail. I was so incredibly suprised how rude and uncaring the warranty service people were. They left us without a car for two and a half weeks half way across the country and couldn't even show some kindness towards us.

The Ford dealership was great in being patient with us but told us the repair would cost $3600, almost half the value of the car. Knowing we couldn't afford this, I called around to get an estimate on the price of a new transmission. Luckily I found a place here in Fort Collins that offered free towing, the same warranty on the work as the ford dealership and quoted me a price of $2335. I they called up Ford, paid their price for "diagnosing my problem," and had the car taken to the AAMCO shop.

The car has now been there since last Saturday. They've had numerous problems getting the transmission apart and reassembled. They finished the assembly on Saturday only to find it was making a grinding noise. They had to take the entire thing apart again only to discover one of the teeth on the 3rd gear was chipped. Thankfully the owner has been exceedingly kind and helpful but the stress of the situation has been overwhelming.

Here we sit, just two days from our intended departure from Fort Collins with no car, wondering constantly when it will be finished and how much it will cost. To be honest, I have no idea if we'll be able to pay for it. I have money saved, but recent college grads don't have that kind of money sitting around for emergencies.

Apart from this there has been constant stress from outside situations I simply won't go into, one being the name change of CCC to Cru. Chass and I both support the change knowing it will allow more to see the message of Christ instead of just our organization's name. Chassity and I are at our wits end. We are weary and we know it. We've sought to find rest in the Lord but the odds just keep stacking up against us. I feel like a man standing at the foot of a cliff that I simply cannot climb. I know God is going to have to take me over but I don't know how or when. I am glad there are things in life that require faith and not just my work alone. My prayer is simply that He would reach down and rescue us. Please pray.

A recap (so far) on our time in Colorado & the story of our car trouble.

"When Satan takes this much interest in you, you must be doing something right"

We have had such a great time in Colorado. We have created wonderful new friendships, received amazing biblical training and so much more! These past 5 weeks have really affirmed our calling into the ministry. With us going into ministry it's no surprise that Satan isn't too thrilled with us. We are definitely seeing the battle rising but know that our Lord is victorious and will see us through.

About 3 weeks ago our car's transmission started to make unhealthy noises. We took it to the Ford dealership here in Fort Collins because Chassity's dad had an extended warranty for it. However, 2 weeks later we come to find that the warranty service is refusing to cover the cost of the repair even though we provided documentation that the transmission was checked and okay when it was serviced. The repair was estimated to be around $3600!! However, God has been so sweet to provide a great support of friends to drive us around and help us to get through this which has been so encouraging during this frustrating time.

Today, we took the car to another shop and will be hearing on Monday how much the repair will cost.
As you can imagine, we are happy about the car finally being fixed but do not currently have the funds it would take for this repair to be paid for. If you would like to give to this immediate financial need please go to the give page.

  • That the car would be fixed soon and able to get us back to Pennsylvania to start our support raising
  • That God would provide the funds to cover the repair
  • That God would begin to raise up our ministry partners

Who or what is a Christian?


I remember as a young boy (4 or 5 yrs old) being in church with my family and hearing repeatedly that you needed to believe in Jesus in order to have eternal life. I remember thinking about this and knowing I needed to believe in Jesus. However, I remember thinking extensively "how do I believe?" (That is deep for 5). I questioned and tried to understand. If I felt doubt at times, did that mean I didn't believe, and therefore that I wouldn't be saved from hell? Would I get to go to heaven? It was scary and made me worry.

Undoubtedly what I was hearing was based off Romans 10:9, which states "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (NIV). This certainly supports my beliefs as a boy, but in the greater context of Romans this message is lacking something vital: faith.

My former definition of a Christian, though I certainly did not know it at the time, was someone who intellectually believes that Jesus is who he says he is. At that point I believed a Christian was merely somebody who went to church or was born in a Christian home. Now, intellect certainly plays a pivotal part in becoming a Christian because we must believe that God's word is true and that Jesus was who He said He was. We have tremendous historical evidence regarding the integrity and authenticity of the scripture that has been accumulated and reanalyzed and tested over hundreds of years. In fact, we have more historical evidence from both Christian and non-christian texts than we do for the defeat of of Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo (1). That is simply remarkable.

Perhaps as a child I wrestled with this because I was relying on emotions. While emotions often follow intellect, I had understood the basic Gospel message but did not feel different. I didn't feel forgiven. I still felt like a kid who wanted to punch his sister and smash things with hammer. I didn't understand why if I believed it was true, I didn't feel any different.

Bill Bright, the founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, said that he believed a wrong emphasis on emotions caused more people to lack the assurance of a vital relationship with God than any one thing (1). I would believe this. I know from my own life that emotions can fail to match what I am truly thinking and understanding. If we rely just on how we feel after making a decision to accept the gift of salvation that Christ offers, and do not support this with trust, we risk falling away.

We should also remember that we are all different and come from different backgrounds. So, when we accept Christ the immediate results may look very different. I have had friends who were held captive by different sins in their lives and the moment they accepted the forgiveness Christ offers they were completely new people. I also have many friends who have grown up in "churched" homes or the "christian" bubble and have had a longer process of coming to faith and growing. We are simply different people from different backgrounds, and we can thank God for that.

The other problem with mere intellectual belief is that without faith it would make me no different than a historian. Sure, I find it true but I am not doing anything about it. We are neglecting to account for the need for will and action. A Christian is literally a Christ-follower or a "little Christ", meaning that the knowledge of the truth of his life and resurrection is accompanied by action. We often call ourselves 'believers' but we must remember we are followers. The scripture is clear that people will know we are Christians by our action.

In John 15:10 we see Jesus saying to his disciples "If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love." Then in verses 13 and 14 he says, "greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command." Now I am not saying that we are saved by works (we will save that for another day) but that being Christian involves action. The works are a result of the faith we have in Christ. It the difference between intellectually acknowledging that a plane can fly and actually stepping on board and taking off. One involves faith resulting in action. Action is a vital step and the sign of a true believer.

To tie this all together and sum it up, we must remember that to be a Christian, we must have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. As Bill Bright described it, there are essentially 4 spiritual laws or 4 things we must know and understand before we can begin that relationship with God.

"The first is that God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life. Second, man is sinful and separated from God; thus he cannot experience God's love or plan. Third, Jesus Christ is God's only provision man's sin. Through Him you can know and experience God's love and plan. Fourth, we must individually receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; Then we can know God's love and plan" (1)

By understanding these four things and accepting that gift of grace and forgiveness that comes through faith, we restore our broken relationship with God and can again access His love and plan. We can do this through prayer expressing our desire for just that, since prayer and delving into the scriptures are sure fire ways to communicate with God and live out that relationship.

I hope this brief blog entry has helped you understand what it means to truly believe in Jesus Christ. Maybe you are a mature Christian who already understands these. Awesome! If this is the case, I'd encourage you to be prepared to give witness to others and help them understand the reason for the hope and joy you have. Even others Christians can struggle to really understand this. I did. Perhaps you were like me when I was younger and never put together what it really means to be a Christian, or maybe you just never really thought about it. If this is the case I'd highly encourage you to check out the book of 1 John. However, if you are still questioning the intellectual basis, that is if Jesus is legitmate I'd encourage you to read the Gospel of John (same author as 1 John) and check out a book called "More than a Carpenter" by Josh McDowell.

Spring Break defined as a mission not mayhem


I officially experienced Spring Break in Panama City Beach! Amongst the heavy-partying spring breakers, Campus Crusade for Christ students come here to share the gospel with over 80,000  spring breakers. I got to experience how God used each of these students to impact thousands of lives for His kingdom! Over 4 weeks students from all across the US came to this spot in hopes to redefine the traditional spring break status quo. In one week alone over 5,000 students heard about Jesus and over 200 accepted Him as their Savior! Hallelujah! While I was there I wrote an article for our international website. Oh the hours we waste....

 While looking up some statistics about college students in general I found this:
"Freshman spend over 9 hours a day using media and technology like phones and social media."
Scary to think but I probably spent equal to or more time than that 4 and a half years ago as a freshman at Slippery Rock University. Thinking about this led me to wonder, " If a freshman is spending these many hours on social media and mobile devices, what are they searching for, looking at, or talking about?" I imagine they are wondering what time the party is, where a certain building is on campus, where they can get free food after class, what the latest gossip is on the engagement of Prince William. Statistics show, what we look at online daily affect our points of view, lifestyles and hearts.

If you were to look at the history on my web browser you would see that most of my time is spent on my social media intrigue, wedding, wedding and more wedding paroozing  along with a another does of social media obsession . This is a true reflection of where my heart is. Matthew 6:21 says "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". If only my web browser history would read "time with God" and "thinking about my Savior", how different would my lifestyle and points of view be. I pray that God may begin to work on restructuring my web browser to land on His homepage always.

I believe there is a way we can reach students with the love and message of Jesus Christ by using media and today's fad technologies that I spend hours on. God has given us all the we need, we just need to use it in the ways He intends; talking about and thinking about Him.

{Love Post}In honor of Valentine's...

Since it was Valentine's Day I just had to add a little bit {love} to the S&S Blog: 

 " If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.  If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
  Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.  For we know in part and we prophesy in part,  but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.  When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. {COFFEE POST} A Prayer for Egypt


While most of us were caught up in the hype of one of my favorite events of all time, THE SUPERBOWL, the world seemed to slip it's focus away one of the biggest uprising in the Middle East. The crisis happening now in Egypt leaves a great hole in what most Egyptians once thought was a great idea. As I spent hours and days at work reading through Speak to Tweets "Say Now" voice messages from Egypt my heart began to see their need for something more. Something more than politics could ever provide them with. They are searching. I had the opportunity to meet Ken Cochrum who is our Global Led Movements Director  at CCCI in the midst of all this happening and all I can remember and reflect on as I pour through article after article is his take on this crisis (this is a summary and collaboration of his thoughts and my own).
People search for God when their hope in people fail. They search when their structures fall and when the life they had that made perfect sense, now seems to be the source of confusion.

How about you? Does your life make sense? Or like the people of Egypt do you seem to have more questions than answers about the life you were so sure was right.

Imagine

"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us" - Ephesians 3:20

Imagine. What are your hopes and dreams. As children our parents tell us that we can be anything and for the most part we grow up wishing that we'll be a firefighter, policeman, teacher or princess. Dreams. I remember those. It was a time before reality set in. College loans, rent, bills, a to-do list of a mile long. Day after day the stresses pour on and my dreams seem to slip away. What happened to my imagination? What happened to believing in the impossible. What happened to believing in the One who is able.

As I reflected on this verse I felt as if God had hit me by a two-by-four. How much am I believing in myself and how much am I truly believing that God is the Lord of all. He IS able to all that we could possibly imagine and so much more. All we have to do is dream, trust Him with our lives and He will bless us in ways we could never see. If i truly believed that God was able to do more than I could imagine how would my perspective of my bills (even as they pile up on the counter) change? Would I treat how I spent my money differently? Where would my hope lie?

He is able to do more in and through us.

Back in the swing

I know I know, enough time has gone by! I have been a phantom blogger long enough now it's time to go to work. So first up; a little recap on my life since December. 

Hmm December, let's see what...what important holiday was in December? Hmm..Oh yea that's right CHRISTMAS!! It was a great time being able to celebrate the birth of my Savior, Redeemer and Author of my life Jesus Christ!

Here is a rundown of my month:

I was able to experience Walt Disney World at Christmas! (photo credits to Amy Saunders)


Had a wonderful time with my and Seth's families! It was wierd seeing all the snow in the North and definitely made me feel blessed to be serving here in Florida this year! We did get to do some wedding planning too! October 8 will be here before we know it! (look for the new changes to us, our ministry and our blog as this year progresss!)
